We are delighted to welcome Sarah Sexton, alongside museum Director and Curator, Dr Jasmine Allen, to give an an online talk on the life and works of stained glass artist Mary Lowndes.
Mary Lowndes (1857-1929) was an influential Arts and Crafts artist and workshop owner, opening her The Glass House studio in London.
Lowndes was one of the first women to work professionally in stained glass in the 1890s, and was an active participant in the suffrage movement, acting as Chair of the Artists' Suffrage League. This talk will explore her life, alongside the work she created.
Recently, The Stained Glass Museum's panel by Lowndes The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple (1910) was featured in the exhibition "A Room of Her Own: Women Artist-Activists in Britain, 1875–1945" at The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
This online talk will take place on Wednesday 1 October at 7pm GMT. Ticket holders will be sent a Zoom link ahead of the event. For those not able to join us live, a recording of the event will be circulated afterwards.
Dr Jasmine Allen is the Director and Curator of The Stained Glass Museum and specialises in stained glass 1800-present, and has published widely in this field. Sarah Sexton has been researching Lowndes for many years, and her research into the eight windows in the church of Sturminster Newton, Dorset, should be published in 2026, after which she will continue her compiling a biography of Mary Lowndes.
