This A5 greeting card is printed with a design from our Museum collection.
'Threshing' is one of twelve windows depicting the 'Labours of the Month'. Each window illustrates an aspect of the rural calendar and this panel represents the month of August. Its design of a man threshing grain shows the work of harvesting that would begin in late summer. The seasonal theme is continued in the border where you can see a small depiction of the Virgin Mary reading. This is intended to represent the zodiac sign Virgo, the phase of which begins in late August and whose symbol is the Virgin. Morris & Company made the Labours of the Month in 1863 but its thought the source for the Labours is a medieval manuscript or almanac.
The card has been left blank inside for your own message. White envelope is included.
