Gothic Echoes

Exclusively for the Stained Glass Museum, artist Tracy Chamberlain has created Gothic Echoes, a collection of jewellery inspired by the intricate flowing patterns found in our Gothic Revival windows.

The term Gothic Revival describes a period in the nineteenth century when artists became deeply influenced by medieval glass and were inspired to relearn its techniques. Designs in this style often include richly decorated borders made of foliage and heraldry, arranged into rhythmic patterns. Dark lead lines were often used as part of the composition, framing repeated motifs in vivid palettes of red, blue, green and yellow glass.

Two of the museum’s Gothic Revival panels, ‘The Dance of Salome’ from 1856 and ‘Moses Returns from Mount Sinai’ from 1863, particularly interest Tracy. Following time spent sketching these works in our gallery, she returned to her studio ready to develop her drawings into jewellery designs. Using her expertise in metal and glass work and through experimentation with her materials, she has translated her sketches into wearable forms.

Hand crafted in silver and brass, metals she has etched and selectively tarnished to evoke a sense of age and history, Tracy has created jewellery that feels both ancient and timeless. Gothic Echoes is a tribute not only to the craftsmanship of the Gothic Revival era, but also to the enduring power of visual storytelling through materials and form.
